Bishop Emeritus Paride Taban (RIP) and the Catholic Diocese of Torit

The Living Hope for Many Lives

About The Book

Bishop Paride Taban (RIP), the first Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Torit, led the diocese through a 21- year period of intense conflict and instability. Appointed in 1983 amid the rekindled civil war between the Sudan’s People Liberation Army(SPLA) and the Sudanese government, his leadership began just as the Diocese of Toit was established.

The conflict, which initially affected Jonglei Province, soon spread to Eastern Equatoria, bringing significant insecurity and a surge of internally displaced persons. In response, Bishop Taban’s diocese implemented relief efforts and relocated its seminary to Juba, navigating the challenges of operating without permanent infrastructure or financial resources.

Throughout his tenure, Bishop’s Taban’s commitment to service remained steadfast despite the turmoil. The Catholic Diocese of Torit emerged as a vital support system for displaced populations and refugees, particularly through its extensive scholarship programs that reached students beyond South Sudan, including Uganda. Bishop Taban’s inclusive approach earned him respect across ethnic and national lines, and his legacy celebrated for providing critical support durnig times of suffering.

To honour his contributions and ensure the diocese’s future, the current administration under Bishop Emmanuel Lowi is focused on establishing financial self- reliance and institutional sustainability in light of reduced donor funding.
